WHAT IS A DISCIPLE AND WHAT IS DISCIPLESHIP?

In the New Testament, the word disciple is used over 200 times, while the word Christian is used 3 times. Every person who has put their faith, hope and trust in Jesus is a disciple of Jesus. The word disciple is used to describe someone who is a devoted follower of Jesus, who is being formed by Jesus and who is intentionally focused on the mission of Jesus.

Matthew 4:19

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

Matthew 28:18-20

When Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

If the word disciple is used to describe someone who is a follower of Jesus then the word discipleship is used to describe the ongoing journey of becoming a more fully devoted follower of Jesus.
